Read What Others Are Saying

Revealing life's splendor of light as well as its cold darkness, Jeanne Johnson weaves her vivid stories into a collection gripping the reader from beginning to end. Most of all she captures the essence of the spirit of survival – and the hope that we will all some day find love and peace within.

Susana Herrera, Author of Mango Elephants in the Sun: How Life in an African Village Let Me Be in My Skin.

Jeanne's stories are so sad yet touching. As I read through the first part it made me realize how much an adult needs to start looking through the eyes of a child once again. Jeanne has such a wonderfully sympathetic and empathetic way of dealing with all her subject matter. After reading the book, it left me with a feeling that obstacles can be overcome and one can learn from these experiences. This book should be read by everyone going through a crisis as it gives the reader such a courageous feeling in the end. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel providing you actually look for it.

I especially related to Jeanne's short story (Ervin) as it conjured up many childhood memories growing up in Bristol, England.

Good Times Weekly Review

Johnson’s “Starlings” is heavy hitting. Even the first chapter makes you want to set the book down and cry. Her stories are fictionalized versions of true stories that she’s heard over the years in her work as a prison chaplain, a teacher and a counselor. That first entry, called “Annie,” is the story about a young girl whose father comes to claim her and take her back to his home. A stubborn child, she refuses, and then is left to develop into a 15-year-old who is exposed to her mother’s promiscuous ways. One day Annie decides to flee and find her father. It’s something of a tearjerker.
